How to Write the Title Properly

1. The title should not be too long, i. e. exceed 60-70 characters. When writing a title, remember that it is relevant not only to search engines, but also to humans. Let’s examine this rule using a search request ‘How to choose a seo plugin for wordpress’ as an example.

The correct title is ‘WordPress SEO Plugin’.
A wrong title: ‘Next Generation Amazing SEO Plugin For WordPress CMS’.

This short title will raise CTR being correct from search engines’ perspective.

2. The main search request should be included in the title only once. You have to determine which request is the main one in your niche for a specific page. It is this request that you should promote in your title. ‘Buy sunglasses wholesale, sunglasses wholesale buy, buy glasses wholesale’ would be a wrong title. Remember, one request cannot be repeated multiple times. Also, the title should be logical and look natural.

3. The main request should be placed in the beginning of your title. It is important that your tag starts from a request the most characteristic to the page’s topic, rather than from auxiliary words.

In the end of the title, put a full company name separated with a dash (“-”), or (“|”). This allows promoting each page based on the brand request.

5. The title should not repeat H1. It is very important that the page’s name and title are different. If you do not know how to make the title and H1 different, add more commercial words or synonyms to the title. At least, the company name should be available in the end of the title.

6. 100% unique title tag. Saying that a website’s content has to be unique, we should remember that this rule refers to titles too. Your title has to be unique both across your website’s pages and all over the Internet. Your website should not have pages with the same title.

7. Use a town (region) of promotion in your title. If you promote your website in a specific town, it is helpful to add to the main search the town where your product or service is offered. For example: ‘Buy camera in Madison’. However, just like with keys, avoid overdoing by mentioning it in your title multiple times.

Please Be Careful

Many people believe that duplicating what their Top-3 competitors have done can help the website to promptly progress to high positions. This is a misconception. Search engines monitor all websites, so they can understand who uses not only page texts, but also a title taken from other websites. Content copying is fraught with unpleasant consequences. So the risk is not worth trying. Devise your own titles based on the above-mentioned rules.

Basic Title Requirements

  1. A title should be unique across all pages of the website not copying titles of pages on other websites (for this purpose, a company name can be added in the end of the title).
  2. A title has to reflect the page’s point and be informative and concise.
  3. Requests by which the page is promoted should be present. The most important ones are placed in the beginning of the tag. A title should contain at least 1-3 keywords.
  4. Avoid putting too many keywords in your title.
  5. The content of tags Title and H1 should be different as their goals are different too: Title is a snippet heading, while H1 is a web page heading.
  6. Prior to use special characters, make sure they are supported.
  7. Avoid using special characters (= / \ + _ ), punctuation marks and stop symbols (period, colon, exclamation mark and question mark). Remember that these characters break title passages, which reduces interconnection of keys placed on both sides of such stop symbols.
  8. Write your title tag for people, according to all relevant language rules. A title must be attractive and engaging, when possible.
  9. The optimum title length is 40 to 70 characters. Google takes into account the length in pixels; a recommended size is 200 to 571 pixels. For longer titles, a snippet shows suspension points, which take extra place in the title too. They can appear either in the end or in the beginning of such snippet heading. A brief title is not good too as it contains too little keys. However, there is no sense to adhere to optimum heading length values when it comes to a website’s service pages, which are NOT promoted by keywords.

Some Tips to Improve CTR

  • Add figures or percentages to your title, for example: 10 Tips to…, 5 Reasons Why…, 3 Best…
  • Use the following adjectives and adverbs: effective, cool, amazing, original, how, step-by-step, simple, easy, fast.
  • Try to give an emotional experience to people reading your title.
Conclusion

Remember, a good title cannot solve all optimization issues. However, this is one of the most important tagging attributes.
